“Xperia XA2 is an exciting addition to our already strong mid-range product offering, bringing bold technologies to this section of the market in the most accessible way possible,” said John Featherstone, Managing Director of Sony Mobile Communications Oceania. “Boasting exceptional front camera technology first seen in our flagship XZ line, Xperia XA2 is the ultimate phone for selfies and is just the start of an exciting product pipeline for 2018.

We can’t wait to release further innovations over the entire Xperia portfolio over the coming months.” Sony Mobile Australia has announced that the ‘Ultimate Selfie Smartphone’, the Sony Xperia XA2 is heading to stores from April 17.

Sony will begin selling the handset online through JB Hi-Fi from today for $549, but for those interested in seeing it in the flesh you’ll be able to go hands-on in JB Hi-Fi and Sony Kiosks (and their online stores) from April 17th.

So, What’s new?

JB Hi-Fi will offer the XA2 in black only, while Sony Kiosks will have the full range, which includes silver, black, blue and pink from April 17th. Sony first announced the Xperia XA2 alongside the XA2 Ultra and Xperia L2 at CES earlier this year.

While the other two models aren’t coming, John Featherstone, Managing Director, Sony Mobile Communications Oceania is pleased to launch this new phone to the Australian market, saying “we’re excited to bring such a strong mid-range product to the market that is packed with Sony Mobile’s exceptional Xperia camera technology and impressive performance features, housed in a sleek, intuitive design.”

The Xperia XA2 showcases Sony’s borderless design with a 5.2″ FullHD resolution display on the front, and a rear one-touch fingerprint scanner embedded in the smooth, metallic-back panel.

The phone houses an impressive 23MP rear camera with Sony’s large 1/2.3” Exmor RSTM for a mobile image sensor, which offers an ISO 12800 sensitivity for clear low-light photography, 4K video recording, and 120fps slow-motion video capture. The phone also houses an 8MP sensor with a 120° super wide-angle lens on the front.

  • Superb battery life

The Xperia XA2 includes a 3,300mAh battery which also supports Quick Charging, though you’ll need to grab one of the Sony UCH12W Quick Chargers for an additional $49. Sony is also selling covers for the Xperia XA2, with a leather-look Style Cover including a stand-in black or silver color options selling for an additional $53 at Sony Kiosks from April 17th.

There was once a time when Sony’s Xperia phones were some of the slickest, most fashionable Android phones out there, thanks to their stylish, minimalist designs and trend-setting features like water-resistance way back in 2013.

Somewhere along the line, the company got stuck in a rut, and despite having phones with impressive specs, Sony’s inability to fix critical mistakes caused its handsets to fall out of favor.

New Specs and other Features

It really seems like Sony might be finally on the path back to greatness with the new Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra. That’s because despite their mid-range aspirations, changes Sony made to its new 5.2 and 6-inches phones show how Xperia could, finally, be ready to evolve.

While there’s no word yet on pricing, the XA2 and XA2 Ultra will be available in the US early February – no local availability details are known yet. The will XA2 feature a Snapdragon 630 CPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a microSD card slot.

Meanwhile, the Ultra will have 4GB of RAM, and either 32GB or 64GB of storage. A couple of months after it first landed in the UK, Sony has today, April 11, 2018.

If you’re a fan of the Sony mobile aesthetic and are looking for some decent performance without the hefty price-tag, the XA2 is likely to appeal. It’s running Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630 SoC under the hood with Android 8.0 on top. It’s capable of fast charging, but you’ll need to fork out for Sony’s UCH12W Quick Charger to get that, as the power-adapter in the box is just a standard model.

Among the improvements from the XA1, the Xperia XA2 features a fingerprint scanner, 5.2-inch (1080p) display and a 3,300 mAh battery. However, it carries across the incredibly hi-res rear camera (23MP) that made the XA1 a pearl in its class, plus a super-wide 120-degree 8MP selfie camera on the front.

You can pick up the dual-SIM Xperia XA2 online from JB Hi-Fi for $549 in Black right now, or you can wait until April 17 to check it out in-store. Unlocking is made easier with the one-touch rear fingerprint sensor – integrated into the smooth metallic back panel. Xperia XA2 is composed of anodized aluminum on the sides, with a diamond-cut finish on the top and bottom, accentuating the industrial beauty of metal.

It represents an evolution of the recognisable Xperia “loop surface” form, with smooth screen curvature and a symmetrical layout for a sleek look and comfortable feel.

According to Sony, the high-capacity 3,300 mAh battery and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 Mobile Platform means you can do more of what you love for longer with smooth and speedy performance.

Quick charging is also supported to give you hours of power with just minutes of charging. Xperia XA2 will be available in Single SIM and Dual SIM variants in silver, black, blue and pink.
